Energy 4.0 with AI in Cross Energy Management

{%ALT_TEXT%}The ES-FLEX-INFRA project, funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, stands for the “Coupling of energy sectors to make the energy infrastructure more flexible”. The software developed for this purpose should enable energy suppliers to analyse and operate load shifts and the integration of storage facilities in the urban infrastructure. In addition to the Fraunhofer SCAI, the participating companies are the Cologne University of Technology, Werusys GmbH & Co. KG and the Rheinische NETZGesellschaft mbH.

The goal was to develop software for the investigation of cross-sectoral energy systems and optimized use of flexibility options for the efficient and economic integration of high shares of renewable energies. Compared to energy storage in the form of electricity, the balance between generation and consumption by load shifting, use of industrial waste heat and thermal energy storage is much more cost-effective and efficient. NRW has an excellent infrastructure which enables intersectoral links:

– Utilisation of unused heat (waste heat, flows) with heat pumps and heat storage facilities or heat networks (combined electricity and heat)

– Utilisation of surplus electricity for the production of methane (power-to-gas) and simultaneous utilisation of the high proportion of process heat through combined heat and power generation (cogeneration of electricity, heat and gas)

– Purchase and feed-in of methane into gas networks or storage facilities, use in CHP processes (coupling of natural gas and heat to electricity)

– Use of surplus electricity in electric mobility or via power-to-gas in natural gas-powered vehicles
